One day on a half hour bus ride, I had a skein of yarn and a hook, but no pattern. So I just started crocheting. I figured a pineapple stitch would be easy enough (for me) to work up. So that’s what I did. Once I got started on it, though, I wanted to see it through to the end and see what it looked like. Over the course of about 12 hours through 5 days, including the time I took to puzzle out the pattern, frogging, and re-working the piece, I was finally happy with the results.

And so was everyone I showed the finished piece to.

The pineapple stitch - or perhaps better, motif - is not a single bundle of stitches in a given space like the popcorn stitch or the cluster stitch, but rather a series of double crochets, chains, and single crochets building in a specific fashion over a number of rows. And every pineapple motif I’ve ever seen is bordered by either a 2dc or 3dc shell.

Materials
4 skeins worsted weight for medium or large (Red Heart Unforgettable Stained Glass) 3 skeins should be sufficient for the small size
5.5 mm hook (size I)
Yarn needle.
Optional: Three or four ¾” to 1” buttons

Other yarns I find are working well for this include: Caron Simply Soft, and Loops and Threads’ Snuggly Wuggly. A heavy worsted weight yarn like Red Heart Super Saver tends to make the shawl too stiff. Whatever yarn you use be sure it has a nice, soft drape.
