String of Dolphins (Senecio Peregrinus) Fun Facts

Senecio Peregrinus is also known as dolphin necklace, flying dolphins, string of dolphins, dolphin plant, or Senecio Hippogriff.

The beautiful dolphin shape is due to the cross-pollination of two plant variants, the Senecio Roweleyanus (string of pearls) and Senecio Articulates (hot dog or candle plant).

Because the dolphin succulent is a cross variety, it’s not a very common plant and can be difficult to find.

They grow cinnamon-scented white blossoms in the fall.

Native to Southwest Africa

Toxic to dogs and cats and can be mildly toxic to humans.

It was first documented by August Grisebach in 1879 as Senecio peregrinus, using the Latin word “dolphin” for its appearance.
