This is an easy crochet pattern worked in simple double crochet stitches, and includes 7 sizes! There is also a video tutorial on the EyeLoveKnots YouTube Channel.

Matching Double Crochet Patterns:

3 preemie sizes available in the Dylan Claire Preemie Beanie pattern.

Materials:

  • 42 (50, 62, 74, 90, 116, 132) Total Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn (split in half for each color) - For the adult small, I used 58 Yards of each WeCrochet Swish in Honey & White
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Soft Tape Measure (gauge is essential)

Material Notes:
If you’ll be creating and donating your beanie for cancer patients, I’ve learned from my friend Krissy’s Over the Mountain Crochet that the best yarn for a sensitive head is going to be a bamboo blend, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Coboo (which are also perfect for warmer weather beanies). Some can tolerate 100% acrylic or wool, but not all can. With this said, I recommend looking up the requirements from the organization. Some say not to use wool yarn, not to use Red Heart Super Saver, request the hat/s to be washed prior to donating, etc. Each has it’s own guidelines so you’ll want to check with the organization first.

As a cold weather beanie, animal fibers are better for keeping warm against the wind, and while alpaca works great, my go-to is always a 100% superwash merino wool, like WeCrochet Swish Yarn, or a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage. All of these that I’ve mentioned hold up well to wear and tear and machine washing and drying. Acrylic yarns do okay in cool weather as long as it’s not that windy, otherwise, the wind goes right through them.

Time Spent:
I worked up the adult small in just over 2 hours, 15 minutes.

Sizes:
Newborn, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, Toddler, Child, Teen/Adult Small and Adult Large

Gauge:
In the round starting with 10 DC, after Round 3 = 3”

Each size has a gauge check within the crown.

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • SC - Single Crochet
  • DC - Double Crochet
