Scotland is famous for producing the best raspberry crops in the world, celebrated for their richness and depth of flavour.

The Subhag Beanie (Gaelic translation for raspberry) celebrates the raspberry fruit by knitting a bubble cluster stitch pattern in a deep pink-coloured yarn. The pattern uses a slightly unusual technique: wrapping yarn around stitches that have been slipped on a cable needle. Why not try out a new technique? It is mastered quickly and not difficult to do.

And in celebrating the raspberry fruit the pattern also includes a recipe for one of Scotland’s most famous (and very delicious) puddings: “Cranachan”.

Finished measurements: Beanie circumference (unstretched): 46cm (18.1in); length from brim to crown: 26cm (10.2in)

Yarn: DK yarn

Materials used: 1 skein of Iolair Yarn Easdale (70% Baby Alpaca, 20% Silk, 10% Cashmere; 225m 246yds/ 100g) or use any DK yarn as substitute; shown in colour “Rhodolite (AM12)”

Gauge: 24 stitches and 28 rows = 10cm 4in in pattern stitch, unblocked

Needles: Gauge-size circular needles; gauge-size needle of your preferred type to knit the crown with ; one cable needle

For reference: A 3.25 mm/ US 3 size circular needle (50cm (19in) length) was used for the cast on and first two rows, a 4mm/ US 6 size needle (80mm (31.4in) length) was used for the main beanie and 4mm/ US 6 size double pointed needles were used to knit the crown

Construction notes: The beanie is knitted in the round with a bubble cluster stitch pattern.
