This cabled hat pattern is the ideal project for beginners. It is available in both a DK and Chunky version.

Yarn:

Blacker Yarns Shetland DK (100% British Shetland Wool; 110 m / 120 yds per 50g)
Fawn; 2 balls

Gauge:

25 sts x 25 rows = 10 cm / 4” with smaller needles in garter stitch

Needles:

4 mm (US 6) - 40 cm / 16” circular needles
3.25 mm (US 3) - 40 cm / 16” circular needles
3.25 (US 3) - double pointed needles

Notes:

This hat is knitted in the round using circular needles. Switch to double pointed needles at the crown. It can also be knitted flat for those not comfortable with circular knitting.
