Sugar Skull Doxie
My “Sugar Skull Doxie” was inspired by “Sugar Skull” by Mette Hesselbjerg, aka mhl crochet designs, and by my own mini Doxie pup, “Ripley”.
Photographing my finished throw was both challenging and intriguing, as this is the only throw that the facial expressions seem to change depending on how the throw is drapes. Sometimes the face looked angry, perfect for Halloween. I’ve been using my throw ever since I completed it, even before I finally got around to publishing it, so it looks a little rough in the photos. This one is by far my favorite crochet piece. I’m just a little biased.
This pattern is available as chart only. I have included the first eight rows written instructions to get you started.
The Doxie Sugar Skull blanket is crocheted using the overlay mosaic crochet technique with tapestry elements. It might look difficult, but it pretty much consists of single crochet and double crochet, so it’s a lot easier than it looks.
You can finish your blanket in a variety of ways. You can leave the tails hanging, trimming them evenly. Or you can braid or twist the tails. Or weave in the ends. I finished my blanket with a double (envelope) border. I worked single crochets on the front side and double crochets on the backside, connecting the two sides with a final round of single crochets. Yarn usage includes the double border. I did not include instructions on how to complete the double border. I may add them later. I wanted make this pattern available ahead of the holidays.
