Summer Bonnet
Summer bonnet is easy to make and comes in handy to protect your hair from the sun. It has slip-stitch selvedges and i-cord ties. We start by making an i-cord, increase to the desired width, work the length, and wrap up with a section of decreases flowing into the second i-cord. Keep in mind that slip-stitch selvedge prevents stockinette fabric from rolling, but not completely - the edge will always have somewhat rolled look to it.
This guide doesn’t include size grading. It’s for creating
a custom-sized bonnet based on your individual measurements and style preferences. You decide the fit and width.
You can use any yarn of your liking. Bear in mind
that the thinner the yarn, the more frail your i-cord will be.
In my example, I am using:
Drops Muskat, 100% Mercerized cotton, 8 ply / DK/
worsted, 50 g = approx 100 m (1.7 oz =109 yards).
I used 42g/ 1.5 oz of this yarn for a bonnet with 30 cm
/11.8’’ i-cords, bonnet body of 46 cm/18’’ x 16 cm/6.3’’, gauge 22 st x 31 rows 10 cm x 10 cm/4’’x4’’. Which means you can make this bonnet using just one DK skein!
