Designed these socks for my daughter with shoe size 42.
In my quest for Dutch fisherman’s sweaters I came across the ” Itse Muts” from the Dutch island of Marken. In the Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem (Nederlands Openluchtmuseum, Arnhem) they still have some of those old fishermans hats from about 1900. It is said that the fishermen from Marken went ashore on Hitland (old name for Shetland) while away for fishing and traded there for knitwear like hats, socks and mittens etc. They used to wear those hats summer and winter. In winter the hat would have an inner hat in one or two colors. So because my sock will not have an inner sock I decide to name this sock Summer on Hitland.
Watching more careful at those hats, it’s clear the hats are knitted in fair isle motifs. Always two colors at a time.
And its actually very funny to find out that those hats are still being knitted. Now called long hats and keps according to size and model.
