A sudden late-summer rainstorm led to the design for this lace crescent shawl. The shawl consists of a pattern of raindrops suspended in a mesh with a bind-off that represents the little droplets that cling to and then fall from leaves and twigs.

Beading is optional but heightens the watery appearance, especially in the bind-off. The pattern includes charts only, no row-by-row written instructions. I’ve broken the densest charts across pages for better readability, but let me know if you need other charts enlarged as well. I do use reds and greens in the charts, but the sizes of the red and green elements is different, so I hope it is still accessible for those with challenges distinguishing between those colors. The pattern allows for several choices of raindrops and whether they are beaded or not, so the charts start as a template and you choose which type of drop you want to insert in the spaces for drops.

As far as I know, the stitch patterns for the raindrops and the edging are unique.

Achieving exact gauge is not necessary, but a gauge swatch pattern is included. At that gauge, the shawl measures 84 inches wide (wingspan) and 30.5 inches from neck to edge.

UPDATE (2022-03-23): Talented test knitter Vanessa Otto just won first prize with this shawl at the Tierra Adorada District Arts Festival! Congratulations to Vanessa!
