This is a 9 page pattern with knitting instructions mostly in chart form. The throw measures 105cm x 140cm (42in x 56in) before the edging is added and is knitted in Rowan Summerlite DK, a soft 100% Egyptian cotton yarn. It could equally well be knitted in any DK yarn knitting to the same tension. I wanted to represent as accurately as possible some of the beautiful British butterflies that appear in the summer and the wildflowers that attract them. Starting at top left and going left to right down the throw, they are the Purple Emperor, Comma, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, Holly Blue, and Swallowtail.

Each square measures 35cm x 35cm (14in x 14cm) and could easily be used to make a cushion if a throw seems too daunting. The throw is knitted bottom to top then sewn together in three strips. You will need to be able to do intarsia and stranded (fair isle) knitting to make the throw. The edging is done using double crochet (American single crochet) all round.
