Sunbird is a lacy semi-circular shawl knit from the bottom edge-up. It is meant to be knit using a single skein (420m/459yards) of fingering weight yarn.

Dimensions after blocking: 152 cm (60”) wide, 60 cm (23.6”) deep

Supplies:

  • 5mm (US 8) knitting needles (or size to hit gauge)
  • 420m/459 yards (100g) of fingering weight yarn, preferably 100% wool or 75% wool/25% manufactured fibers (common sock yarn blend) as this is a type of yarn that safely supports a pretty aggressive blocking – and you will need to block the bottom edge of the shawl pretty aggressively. The shawl in the pictures was made using a ball of Cheval Blanc in the colorway 101 Tournesol. In the end 6.5g of yarn remained. If you do settle for a more delicate fiber blend, please remember to be extra careful during the blocking process.
  • 2 different stitch markers. They will be used as marker A (mA) and marker B (mB).
  • a darning needle to weave in the ends.
  • pins (or blocking wires) and blocking mats.

Difficulty: advanced if you’re not familiar with knitting lace. You’ll have to do lace on both the right and the wrong side for the feather lace pattern. You’ll also have to work many ‘pass slipped stitch over 2 knit stitches’ during another section of the shawl.
