Sunday Slouch began as a gauge swatch you can actually wear… and it comes with a little story.

The Fair Isle sweater pattern I was working on for a class looked great on paper. The colours sang and the patterning worked. I had swatched — but I had swatched in stripes.

After about three inches of colourwork, I hated the way the colours I had chosen were working together in pattern. So I ripped back those three inches and rethought my colour placement.

I designed this hat to test the colours properly — and to save my students from the same grief.

Sunday Slouch is a stranded colorwork hat knitting pattern worked seamlessly in the round, bottom-up from brim to crown. If you are comfortable carrying two colors and ready to let Fair Isle patterning do the heavy lifting, this relaxed, generously crowned silhouette is your next cast-on.

Construction and technique

Bottom-up, in the round, seamless construction; no seaming at any stage
Stranded Fair Isle colorwork runs through the body of the hat, worked in the round for consistent tension
• Fitted brim transitions to a slouchy, relaxed crown with a classic tapered finish
• Intermediate skill level; prior experience knitting in the round and managing two-color floats makes this a smooth knit
• Lightly blocked to finished dimensions to open up the colorwork
