Sunny Petal Vest
This cheerful granny square vest is built from the center out and grows naturally into size, which makes the process relaxed and intuitive. No strict gauge matching, no complicated shaping — just keep working the granny pattern until the square reaches the width you need.
It works up very quickly!
The vest is made from two simple rectangles and finished with ribbed edging at the neckline and armholes. A small sunflower-style granny flower adds a playful detail and makes the vest perfect for everyday wear, photo shoots, or a cozy handmade gift.
Skill level: Intermediate (confident beginners should also feel comfortable).
Recommended yarn: #4 Medium weight yarn.
Materials used:
- Red Heart Classic Yarn – Off-White (main color)
- Small amounts of orange, beige, and brown yarn for the flower
- Crochet hook 5.5 mm (US I-9).
Sizes included: Newborn – 5 years.
Approximate yarn requirements
Newborn – about 140 yd / 125 m
3 months – about 160 yd / 145 m
6 months – about 170 yd / 160 m
12 months – about 190 yd / 175 m
18 months – about 210 yd / 195 m
2 years – about 230 yd / 215 m
3 years – about 250 yd / 230 m
4 years – about 270 yd / 250 m
5 years – about 300 yd / 270 m
Small scraps are needed for the flower.
Because the vest grows from the center of the square, the granny square construction allows you to crochet the vest in almost any size, including larger children or adults. Just continue adding rounds until the square reaches the needed width.
The flower, however, stays the same size (about 3 in / 7–8 cm across), so on larger vests it will appear proportionally smaller.
Pattern includes:
- step-by-step photos
- written instructions
- stitch diagrams.
Stitches used: single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, front post double crochet, back post double crochet, double crochet 5 together, puff stitch.
Happy crocheting!
