Sunsational Shawl
The color and design of this shawl are reminiscent of a bright, sunny day which is why I chose the name Sunsational! It is a triangular-shaped shawl that is worked flat from left tip to right edge. The pattern is worked with a combination of Garter-Stitch sections combined with a Slip-Stitch ribbing. Stitches are increased every RS row to the full width of the slip stitch panel that runs down the left side, then new stitches are added in a garter stitch fade to the end of the shawl.
Sunsational Shawl is DK weight, worked with two strands held throughout of fingering weight yarn to create a marl or “fade” as the colors transition from one variation to the next.
The panel on the left is worked with a constant main color (2 strands of the main color held together) while the triangle on the right is worked with the ever-changing fade colors. The left panel is worked with the main color held together in two strands. This can be done with 2 full skeins of yarn. For the triangular portion, your “fade” skeins will have to be divided into 2 because there will be times when you will need two strands of the same color held together.
Materials:
Needles: 32-inch US 8 (5.00 mm) circular needles
Notions: two stitch markers, one tapestry needle
Gauge: 22 sts and 18 rows = 4” in slip stitch and garter stitch, after blocking
Yarn: 2000-2200 yds fingering weight yarn total, approx two 438 yds skeins of the main color and one 438 yds skein each of 3 contrasting colors.
Finished Measurements: The wingspan measures approximately 73 inches long, the depth measures about 31 inches deep at the widest point after blocking.
Sample Yarn:
Color A: Hooker’s Corner Squish Sock, 2 skeins 438 yds/ 100 grams (each) “Here Comes The Sun”
Color B: Hooker’s Corner Squish Sock, 1 skein 438 yds/ 100 grams “Lucy In The Sky”
Color C: Hooker’s Corner Squish Sock, 1 skein 438 yds/ 100 grams “Tubular”
Color D: Hooker’s Corner Squish Sock, 1 skein 438 yds/100 grams “Babbling Brook”
For results that look the most similar to the sample, use the suggested yarn or a merino-based yarn. Choose yarns that have high contrast with each other, or that will “fade” from one color to the next.
As written, the sample used the five suggested skeins in full, and depending on which yarn you choose, some will require slightly more than one skein of each color. ANY changes to size or gauge will result in differing yardage requirements, and any increases of the final size will require additional skeins. Please use Color A to swatch. Swatching is not compulsory for this pattern, but will help determine drape and needle size.
The pattern is written in standard American terms. It contains comprehensive instruction on supplies, abbreviations, and extra notes to help explain the process.
