In the 3rd poem of Kalevala, Väinämöinen and Joukahainen are competing in knowledge and wisdom, and Väinämöinen sings his competitor into a swamp. In his panic Joukahainen promises his sister to Väinämöinen as a bride. Joukahainen’s mother is very pleased that her daughter will marry a great and important man, but the maiden is unhappy about her betrothal to the old gray bearded Väinämöinen. Mittens are inspired by Finnish swamp and nature.

You can find my other Kalevala inspired designs from my Instagram account @ihtiriekkoknits

The mittens are worked seamless from the bottom up, increasing for the thumb. After increases are finished, the thumb-stitches are placed on a thread before finishing the hand. The thumb is worked to finish.
