The Story
I love playing with color-work - changing direction of colors is one of my favorite things. These hats feature two color stripes in various widths/heights, vertical stripes adjacent to horizontal stripes. The contrast between colors used will create greater (or lesser) visual striping in the horizontal striped section.

Materials

  • Color A: 115 yds - Modelled: Haute Knit Yarns DK (DK weight; 100% superwash merino wool; 231 yds/100g): 1 skein ‘Super Fly’
  • Color B: 115 yds - Modelled: Haute Knit Yarns DK (DK weight; 100% superwash merino wool; 231 yds/100g): 1 skein ‘Charcoal’
  • US 4 (3.5mm) 16” circular needle
  • US 6 (4.0mm) 16” circular needle
  • US 6 (4.0mm) set of DPNs
  • US 7 (4.5mm) 16” circular needle (corrugated rib option only)
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle

Notes

  • This hat is knit in the round from the brim up, starting with the smallest needle size for the ribbing.
  • This hat is designed to include a vertical striped section using two colors; a brioche option and a corrugated rib option are provided. Note that each option uses different needle sizes.
  • Adjust needle size(s) as necessary to match gauge.
  • When the circumference of the hat becomes too small for the circular needle during the Crown Shaping, change to DPNs to finish the hat.
  • Instructions are given for Fitted size, with Slouch size in parentheses. When only one set of instructions is given, it applies to both sizes.
  • You may choose either skein of yarn to be Colors A and B, however, note that Color A will use more yarn in the working of the pattern.
  • NOTE: Due to row gauge variances, you may run out of Color A when knitting the Slouch version of this hat (though the sample was completed with 15 yds remaining). In this instance, finish all Crown Shaping using Color B only.
