The Surf City shawl is about the sun, sand, waves, and summer. The shawl starts with sandy beaches of garter stitch and then the dance of mosaic waves begins. With each wave, the sand shifts and molds, creating a canvas of ever-changing patterns and textures without a single purl in sight. And if you visit Surf City as the sun dips below the horizon, Surf City comes alive with beach bonfires and starlit strolls along the water’s edge. So pick your yarn color and your sense of adventure, because the beach is calling, and the sand and waves are waiting to whisk you away on a journey you’ll never forget.

The shawl is a crescent shape, knitted top down in garter stitch and mosaic knitting. Only one color is used at a time. The pattern can be worked from the written instructions or charts. There are three sizes to choose from.

Choose solid or semi-solid yarn for the MC, 3 contrast colors in a gradient, plus 1 pop color as an accent. You can use mini skeins, leftovers, ombre, and slow gradients.

  • compact (4 pages, 11 pt)

  • large print (5 pages, 20 pt), the version with big letters for those who use portable devices like tablets and e-readers; also for those knitters who have difficulties reading small font on paper.

  • charts to use along with the written instruction (2 pages, 11 pt). If you want bigger charts, you can print them as a poster (in Acrobat: tile scale 125% with 1” overlap will spread each page on 2 sheets of paper, the equivalent of 17”x 11”).
