The Surprise Twist Hat is knit from the bottom up using traveling twisted stitches to form an engaging pattern that highlights the rich colors of this wonderfully soft extra bulky yarn. Using three repeats of a charted pattern, a single skein works up quickly into a structured yet cozy hat.

Yarn
Approximately one skein of Malabrigo Rasta (100% merino, 90 yd/ 82 m, 150 g per skein). I used colorway 833/Sheri and had about 1 yard left after finishing the hat.

Finished Measurements
About 20 inches in circumference at the brim and about 9 inches tall when freshly blocked. Using Malabrigo Rasta I found that with time and wear this hat stretched several inches wider.

Gauge
10 stitches and 14 rows = 4 inches in stockinette.

Suggested Needles

Size US 11 (5.5 mm) circular needle, 16-26” circumference for ribbing
Size US 13 (8.0 mm) circular needle, 16-26” circumference for main body
Size US 13 (8.0 mm) double pointed needles for decrease section
Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain the correct gauge. You may need larger needles.

Necessary skills: Knitting in the round, knitting from a chart, knitting twisted and traveling stitches, knitting with double pointed needles for hat decreases.

Notions: One main marker and two additional for marking chart sections.
