WHAT IS IT?

I first created this item out of frustration. I have been living with an autoimmune disease for the last 35 years and I have slept on gurneys in hospitals’ hallways more times than I can count, with no table to put away my eyeglasses at night or any other small object.

It’s big enough to hold your glasses, a cell phone, a small notepad, and a pen or pencil. It can be hung from a gurney rail. If you are in a hallway, use the rail against the wall, close to your head. It’s the safest place to store your belongings. It can also be useful to people in a wheelchair or using a walker. Of course, you could simply want to hang it from the arm of a lawn chair, and it’s fine too! Whatever floats your boat!

This project involves cable cast-on, double-knitting, buttonhole techniques, and some sewing.

YOU WILL NEED

  • 2 colours of worsted (9 wpi) yarn. Whatever you have on hand will do, as long as it’s not too stretchy.
  • 90 yards (82,3 m) of each colour for a total of 180 yards (165 m)
  • Needles: 4 mm (US 6) or any size needed to get the right gauge.
  • Button: 7/8 inch (23 mm)
  • Darning needle
  • Thread to sew the button

Size of large pocket: 5 1⁄2” x 5 1⁄2” (14x14cm)
Size of small pocket: 5 1⁄4” x 2 1⁄2” (13,3 x 6,3 cm)

This pattern has 11 pages, filled with detailed explanations, charts, and pictures. Oh, and please do not mind the poor manicure. It was already overdue when I created this pattern in the middle of the COVID-19 quarantine.

I hope that you will enjoy knitting this little thingy!

Thank you to Raveler Gwyndolyn for her suggestion to identify the finished project inside or in the back with either the full name of its owner or the medical/hospital file number. Things can get misplaced, left behind or lost very easily.
