Suzy Shawl
I often get comments on the simple shawl I wear both at historic events and around town.
The shape is a triangle. When worn around the neck the shape creates a nice shawl collar, and when worn over the shoulders it has a nice drape. I added a clasp to mine so that I can keep it from slipping off my shoulders when doing something productive like taking in the groceries, but when I’m sittin’ and knittin’ I prefer to keep it unclasped.
The Suzy Shawl is simply an expansion of the well-known “dishrag pattern.” The yarnovers create a lacy hole and also add one stitch to each row. You never have to count higher than 3, so it’s a good project to work on at meetings or while watching TV. The gauge is not important, and you can knit it as long or as short as you want - both of which made it a great project for a beginner.
This pattern is so easy I often verbally share it, but a free written copy (pdf) is available on my website (www.suzy-the-shepherdess.com/patterns/free-patterns/)
Mine is 28 inches long (124 rows) and 60 inches wide and is finished with a row of double crochet (I think the crochet gives it a nice finished look, but it is optional). I used 7 skeins of Suzy the Shepherdess 100% wool yarn and size 7 needles.
