Swan lake socks are a flirty, summery, ballet dancer inspired design. They feature a low ankle with a contrast cast on, a cute little ruffle, a cabled cuff and a contrast heel and toe. The pattern includes instructions and a tutorial for a shadow wrap short row heel with options for a standard or roomier heel in all sizes. Swan lake socks are worked top down in the round and can be worked in sizes: XS, S, M & L.

Sizes
XS: 54st cuff – EU 35 – 37 / UK 2 – 4
S: 60st cuff – EU 37 – 39 / UK 4 – 5.5
M: 66st cuff – EU 40 – 42 / UK 6 – 7.5
L: 72st cuff – EU 42 – 45 / UK 8 – 10

Instructions for specific sizes are given as XS (S, M, L) in the pattern. Foot and ankle length can be shortened or lengthened as desired by working more or fewer rounds before beginning the heel / toe. (Note this will alter the amount of yarn you will require). It is always recommended to measure the length of your foot and work the foot length accordingly for a perfect fit.
If you have particularly narrow feet I would recommend going down a size and working a longer foot length or for wide feet I would recommend going up a size and working a shorter foot length to achieve the best fit.

Equipment

  • 2.25mm 23cm / 9” circular needles OR 2.25mm longer circular needles for magic loop OR 2.25mm double pointed needles (or size to meet gauge).
  • 2.25mm cable needle or spare double pointed needle
  • Stitch markers x2 (one different to mark beginning of round)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure

Yarn
Main colour: approx. 38 - 74g / 152-296m / 167-324 yards of 4ply sock yarn
Contrast colour (for heel toe and cast on): approx. 8-20g / 32-80m / 35-88 yards of 4ply sock yarn

NOTE: Exact yarn requirements will depend on the size knitted and your tension. If you plan to increase the foot or ankle length you will also need more main colour yarn.

Sample socks shown are knitted using Coop knits Socks Yeah! 4 ply in shade 128 – Lepidolite for the main colour and shade 120 – Ammolite the contrast colour.

Gauge
30 stitches and 48 rows for a 10x10cm / 4x4 inch square in stockinette stitch.
