Swapmeet Scarf
The Swapmeet scarf is an adventure in knitting fun stripes to use up your scrap yarns. Then, if you wish, add funky mini tassels at the end of each stripe. The two-colour stripes take a little practice, but your hands will get the rhythm soon enough and the rest of the knitting is easy. You can use scrap yarns, mini skeins, a colour-changing yarn or whatever you have on hand. Alternatively, you could arrange to MEET another knitter and SWAP some colours. Whatever you choose, have fun!
Finished dimensions of the sample: 2.28 m (89.75 in) long and 18 cm (7 in) wide. The width and length are fully adjustable.
Gauge: 24 st and 33 rows in 10 cm (4 in) in pattern after a light steam blocking. Gauge is not critical for this project but differences in gauge will affect the size of the finished scarf and your yarn usage.
Yarn: Main colour (MC) 540-580 m (600-640 yards) of fingering weight yarn and approx. 70-75 m (80- 85 y) of scrap yarns for the stripes. For the sample, each stripe used approximately 2 m of yarn. The sample has 34 stripes, and a different colour was used for each stripe. If you want to make little tassels like the ones on the sample, (optional of course!) allow an extra 1.5 m of each scrap yarn (approx. 50 m/55 yards extra in total).
Needles: 3.75 mm (US 5) or size needed to obtain gauge.
Supplies: Yarn needle, scissors.
