Ultimately you can use any weight yarn that you would like.

The stripe pattern is as follows color 1, color 2, color 3, color 4, color 5 and then repeats. Pick any color for the solid side.

As far as increases and decreases they will occur every other row. Use a stitch marker to mark them so you do not lose track. Or keep in mind the even rows will be either be an increase or decrease.

I/ 5.5mm Tunisian Crochet hook or whatever hook needed to meet gauge. and 16 in cord.
