The design for this hat is inspired by classic knit/purl texture stitch motifs such as those used in British Fishermans’ Gansey jumpers. I have been making these for decades to test stitch motifs and I call this series ‘Swift 6’ because in this weight, the simple 6-stitch repeats work up very quickly, and the swirl top decreases are divided into 6 ‘pie slices’. It begins with a ribbed welt from the bottom up & is offered in 5 sizes for everyone in the family. Worked in the round using any aran weight /heavy worsted yarn. Basic circular knitting and good chart reading skills required. This free pattern includes a bonus Channel Island Cast-on photo tutorial on the last page.

For this project you will need about 160-198 yards of any heavy worsted or Aran weight yarn (shown in Classic Elite Devon & Cascade 220) dp ndls in 4.5mm (US# 7), a 16” circular of the same size, and a 16” circular in 3.4mm (US #4) for the ribbed welt. You will also need a Stitch marker and a yarn darning needle.
Written for child size with youth, adult small, md & Lg following in parenthesis, at 4.5 sts per “1 on 4.5mm (US #7) measured over seed stitch. (or size needed to obtain gauge).
