Take Wing is a design built directly into CustomFit, which means that each Take Wing pattern is written specifically to your choice of gauge and size, for adults and kids.

“Take Wing” is an adult-sized riff on my “Birdie” child-sized cardigan from my book “You Can Knit That”, and was designed for the entire Lorna’s Laces hand-dyed yarn line. I’ve shown samples here in two of their yarn bases, Shepherd Worsted and Sportmate, both in the color “Painted Sunset”. But the small-scale slip stitch texture will work beautifully with any of their yarns, in any of their colors.

When swatching for this design, please swatch in the Slip Stitch Texture, which you can find by clicking here. I’ve paired the allover texture with a straight-bodied silhouette, simple 1x1 ribbing, and a classic V neckline. The samples shown feature a long sweater length and long sleeves, but you can customize your own sweater and sleeve lengths, as usual.

One more note: Straight sweaters in CustomFit are worked with a single stitch count from CO to bust; that count is determined by the largest of all hip, waist, and bust circumferences.

Amy’s sample is shown in Lorna’s Laces Sportmate; Beth’s in Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted, both in the color “Painted Sunset”. (Beth is wearing a “close fit”, and Amy an “average fit”.)

If you’re using the recommended yarns, you’ll need approximately 4 (4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9) hanks of the Sportmate, or 5 (5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10) hanks of the Shepherd Worsted, for a standard size 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60)’’ / 76 (81, 86, 91, 97, 102, 107, 112, 122, 132, 142, 152) cm sample.

If you’re using a different mix or gauge, I strongly recommend Hannah Fettig’s excellent app Stashbot for yardage estimates. Because while I’ve given approximate quantities for standard size sweaters, CustomFit will make Take Wing in the size and gauge of your choice. (And it’s pretty tough to give yardage requirements for any possible combination!)
