Growing up on the Connecticut coast, I spent many summer days and evenings roaming the town beach, collecting seashells and dragging red-brown and green seaweed in from the surf. Tangleweed is inspired by those childhood seaweed harvests. The hat’s ribbed pattern reminds me of ribbons of sugar kelp and the kelp bulbs that washed up in clumps between the jetties.

Tangleweed is knit from the bottom up, starting with a tubular cast-on for surprisingly stretchy brim. The kelp and cable rib pattern is both written and charted, and knits up beautifully in yarns with drape (like the blue sample, which was made with a wool cashmere blend) and yarns with a little more memory.

Thanks to the stretchy rib pattern, the hat will fit heads 1 to 4 inches larger than the finished circumference. If you want a slouchier fit, go with the size closest to your head circumference. For a fitted beanie, choose the next size down.
