Notes from the Designer:

Tartan is a lightweight cardigan that uses three different colors to create a beautiful plaid pattern. The pattern is created using a method called tapestry crochet, which is a very simple way to introduce more complicated colorwork. This cardigan is constructed by making three flat panels, which are sewn together, and then the sleeves are worked into the body.

  • Click here to watch a video tutorial demonstrating how to work the tapestry stitches in this pattern.
  • Both samples shown in size XS on a 34” (86 cm) bust with approximately 2” of positive ease.
  • The starting chain for each row does NOT count as a stitch.
  • The starting chain should always be a multiple of 15 + 1.
  • The cardigan is made by creating three panels, which are then sewn together, leaving a space for armholes. The sleeves are then crocheted onto the armholes.
  • Each 15 st x 14 row square is 4” x 4” and uses approximately 16 yds of that particular color. If you wish to make the cardigan wider or longer, you can calculate how many extra squares you will need of each color (based on the repeating pattern). Multiply the number of squares by 16, and that will give you the approximate extra yardage you will need to complete the cardigan as desired.
  • The pattern is created using the tapestry crochet method. This means you will be creating stitches over the strands of yarn that you are currently not using in that row, until you pick it up again.
