I’ve worked on mourning shawls for years. Each time a close friend lost a loved one (especially a partner, parent, or sibling), I would pull out the yarn and cast on. After working with other people’s patterns (and going through a particularly difficult transition in my own life), I knew it was time to create my own.

This shawl represents that journey from tears to laughter. Simple garter stitch striping knits up easily, and with the generous size, we’ll all be in the laughter phase by the time the shawl is finished.

I created this piece especially for my partners at Sew Steamboat. They inspired me with their support, love, creativity, strength, and laughter. Their encouragement and dedication have shown me that anything is possible.

I used three different colors for this shawl: one dark, one medium, and one light.

The simplicity of this piece allows for both dressing up and throwing the shawl over your shoulders to wear to the grocery store. In addition, the length and depth mean that it can easily transition from a wrap to a generously wide scarf.
