Terra Ridge Mittens | Knitting Pattern

The Terra Ridge Mittens bring the geometric texture and structure of the Terra Ridge collection to a cozy, practical winter accessory. Inspired by the ridges and valleys of mountain terrain and my experiences taking on Spartan challenges, this design reflects strength, adventure, and the determination to keep going.

Gauge (in pattern, unblocked)
Super Bulky

• 7 stitches × 10 rows = 2 × 2 inches (5 × 5 cm)
• US 10.5 (6.50 mm) needles

Aran/Light Bulky

• 11 stitches × 13 rows = 2 × 2 inches (5 × 5 cm)
• US 6 (4.00 mm) needles

Gauge is important for achieving the intended finished measurements. If your gauge differs, your mitten size may also differ.

Yarn weight classifications can vary between brands and fibres. When substituting yarn, consider both gauge and wraps per inch (WPI), rather than relying solely on the yarn’s labelled weight. Adjust needle size as needed to obtain gauge, if required.

Needles

• Super Bulky: US 10.5 (6.50 mm) double-pointed needles
• Aran/Light Bulky: US 6 (4.00 mm) double-pointed needles
• Or needle size required to obtain gauge

The pattern is written using three double-pointed needles (DPNs), although the magic loop method may be used if preferred.

Yarn Requirements

Super Bulky:

• Approximately 87 yards (80 metres) / 145 grams
• Suggested WPI: 7
• One standard 150 g skein of Malabrigo Rasta is sufficient at the stated yardage.

Aran/Light Bulky:

• Approximately 120 yards (110 metres) / 92 grams
• Suggested WPI: 12
• One standard 100 g skein of Malabrigo Mecha is sufficient at the stated yardage.

Yardage is estimated for one pair of mittens using the finished measurements provided.

Additional yarn may be needed if adjusting mitten length or if your gauge differs from the pattern.

Construction and Techniques

• Worked in the round from cuff to fingertips
• Knit and purl stitch combinations create the textured design
• Long-tail cast-on or preferred stretchy cast-on
• Simple increases and decreases
• Afterthought thumb using scrap yarn
• Thumb stitches picked up after completing the mitten body

The pattern includes separate instructions for the Right and Left Mittens to accommodate thumb placement.

Adjustments

The mitten length can be adjusted by adding or removing stitch-pattern repeat sets.

Adjusting the circumference is not recommended, as the textured design is based on a six-stitch repeat.
