The Terwilliger Curves are a stretch of Interstate I-5 in Portland, Oregon. The road’s curves change direction five times in about 1 mile (1.6 km).

Reminiscent of the curves, the shawl’s chevrons change direction to showcase a dyer’s colorwork.

Using Gestalt principles, the chevrons were specifically sized for yarns where color changes occur every 4-10 in (10-30 cm).

Intentionally planning a pattern for a specific color pattern avoids creating a fabric that appears “muddy” or random.

The models shown in the pattern highlight the work of three very talented, independent hand dyers:

Heather Breadner of Aberdeen’s Wool Company,
Heather Campbell of Purly Shell Fiber Arts, and
Rhichard Devrieze of The Yarns of Rhichard Devrieze.

The Malabrigo laceweight, used with Purly Shell’s Elegant Alpaca, was doubled to match fingering weight.

Although the dyers use different fibers and colors in their artwork, each creates a beautiful yarn with colors that change every 4-10 in (10-30 cm). The same and yet, so different.
