This sock was inspired by a 1920’s commentarial sock in the MFA Boston collection, 1950’s loafers, and the classic 1957 Chevy. The foot, top and bottom, is worked flat. Sock uses a mock short-row heel technique described by Roxanne Richardson. The instep insert and eyelet leg bands provide opportunity for creative modifications. Instructions written for Magic Loop method, but can be modified for 2 circular needles or double-points. Other sock features include: toe up construction, mini gusset, and Andalusian stitch pattern.

Difficulty: Experienced: toe-up construction, chart reading

SIZE: Small (Medium, Large)
Choose size based on standing circumference at ball of foot: ~ 8 (9, 10) inches ~ 20 (23, 25) cm. Total foot sts: 58 (62, 66). Total leg sts: 60 (64, 68). (Fit is similar to plain stockinette sock.)

Finished Medium Sock Measurements: toe to heel, 9.25” (22.9 cm);
bottom of heel to top of cuff, ~8.0 inches (21.6 cm);
cuff height, ~1.5“ (3.8 cm); 1/2 circumference foot, ~3.25” (8.3 cm);
½ circumference heel diagonal ~ 4.5 inches (11.4 cm).

GAUGE: stockinette in round, using 2.25 mm, 24 inch circular needle; ~9 sts, 12 rounds per inch (~36 sts, 48 rounds per 10 x 10 cm).

MATERIALS AND TOOLS
Yarn: MC ~1 skein (440 yds, 402 m/115 g); CC ~20 g Fingering Weight sock yarn. These are not exact amounts but will ensure enough for a pair of socks with measurements stated. Amount will vary based on sock size and foot and leg length.

Needle: 2.25 mm, 24 inch circular needle. Sock knit using Magic Loop method, but can also be worked with 2 circular needles or double-point needles making adjustments to pattern for the method used.

Other: at least 4 closed stitch markers (safety pins will work), darning needle for finishing. (Optional: smaller diameter helper needle for picking up selvage edge stitches.)

ERRARA: Please note that in the introduction of the PDF version of the pattern, the designer attribute for the mock short-row heel should be Roxanne Richardson. My apologies to the designer for making that error.
