Afro Square - Crochet Granny Square Block Pattern

THE PATTERN
The Afro Square is worked in simple stitches. The background square is worked in joined rounds and the appliqué or embellishment parts are sewn on afterwards. This written pattern is for one square and one representation of “people”. It includes detailed notes and plenty of colour photographs, as well as suggestions on how to personalise your Square. This square can be added to a project or you can make multiples and create a cushion cover, blanket, afghan, wearable, etc., or anything your heart desires and your mind can imagine. The possibilities are endless and your imagination is the limit!

The pattern uses 4 different techniques that any beginner or intermediate crocheter can tackle with ease.

CROCHET TERMINOLOGY
The pattern is written in English in U.S. crochet terms. The UK conversion terms are included.

THINGS YOU’LL NEED
I used 4-ply worsted weight acrylic yarn in 4 different colours and a US H-8 (5mm) hook. However, feel free to substitute any weight yarn and its appropriate-sized hook to fit your desired project. Just remember your measurements and yardage may vary accordingly. This is a great project for using up scrap yarn!

For one square you will need about 1-2 yards (100-200 cm) for each colour, plus smaller amounts for the other colours you choose to add. This is only an estimate and will vary depending on the hook size and type of yarn you choose.

MEASUREMENTS
Using worsted weight yarn and a US H-8 (5mm) hook, your square will measure 4in x 4in (10cm x 10cm), after blocking.
