INSPIRATION:
What started out as a scarf for my son out of necessity, he’s 17 and is too cool for a jacket, became a union of projects of sort. The word Alliance means the state of being allied; the action of allying, a bond or connection between families or individuals, an association to further the common interests of the members all of which come together in this scarf. He is an ally however in the truest sense not only to our family but to our community by being a positive Male Role Model amongst Peers and those young men following in his footsteps. He has accompanied me to teach in the community, volunteered with peers that are black and brown and has been given the opportunity to plant seeds of his own with our local youth through community engagement. The further I knit on this during Covid 2020 and the protests in response to the murder of various Black/Black Trans/Brown/ Black Women/ Latinx folxs within days of each other I got to researching again what organizations nationally are working to educate and further the goals of our collective growth. I locally do a lot of with National Compadres Network prior to Covid since I was a teen, worked with My Brother’s Keeper, Pro Youth & Families and 3 local Counties Juvenile Justice Departments as well, but it isn’t just a local issue it’s a national one, I came across The Alliance for Boys and Men of Color which is an alliance of some 200+ organizations nationwide collectively doing the very thing some of us grassroots were and are doing. Since I can’t be on the front lines due to my auto immune disease the next best thing in terms of Direct Action was to donated to fund the initiatives that are currently growing!
