The Amsterdam blanket came about when I wanted to test a new yarn.

I started with the idea of a cute little cushion. But while I was designing and crocheting the first canal house, I was instantly hooked. The yarn crochets beautifully, and I really loved the little house. Soon I was making a whole row of houses. Because I started with the idea of a cushion, I tied the blocks together, so it wouldn’t be visible. Now, I think the fringe on the back is quite charming. If you don’t like that, I recommend making a thin fleece blanket behind the blanket.

Because I get bored easily and I realized that a whole blanket made entirely of houses might be a bit dull, I decided I could convert one of Amsterdam’s iconic buildings into a crochet pattern: The Royal Palace on Dam Square. The palace stretches across the entire width of the blanket, and because I “chopped” the palace into pieces and used different colors, I think it turned out cool.
After another house, it was time for another special building: the Westertoren, or rather, the Westerkerk. A “world-famous” tower in the well-known Jordaan district. And, of course, familiar from various songs by Amsterdam singers. Finally, I use the word Amsterdam, and because Amsterdam is celebrating its 750th anniversary this year, I also use the number 750.
All in all, there are 10 different canal houses, a streetlamp, the palace divided into five parts, and the Westerkerk, consisting of three parts, with one part spanning two rows.

This pattern is a diagram only and can be combined as desired. My blanket has 4 rows (each 100 rows high) with a total of 246 stitches. You can combine the houses however you like. If you have the same total number of stitches for each row, you can create your own design.

I hope you enjoy making this blanket as much as I did!
