The Chrysanthemum Bag
This crochet pattern will create a stylish crossbody bag made from four monochromatic granny-square sunburst flowers and scalloped edging, with the option to make an interior pocket for cards and ID. It is secured by a zipper, lined with fabric, and features metal hardware with alligator clips and an adjustable strap.
Some sewing skills are needed for the lining and installing the zipper, so a sewing machine is recommended, though it is possible to sew by hand. You can also omit the zipper closure altogether and use a magnetic closure or snap instead.
Written in U.S crochet terms with several photos to help you keep you on track. Recommended for intermediate level skills, though beginners can navigate this pattern with practice.
Supplies:
- Recommended Yarn: Lion Brand Coboo in beige (pictured), or any color you like OR any light (3) yarn of your choice. You’ll need a little more than 1 skein, about 112 g. (Each skein is 100 g.) Make sure to purchase from the same dye lot.
- Size F hook (3.75 mm)
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- Stitch markers
- Blocking board or something to block your granny squares on
- 1” metal slide buckle
- (2) 1” metal lobster claw D-ring swivel clasps
- (2) 1” metal D rings
For optional zipper closure, linging and pocket:
- Matching sewing thread
- Sewing machine or sewing needle to sew bag lining and lobster claw clasps to the bag strap
- Polyester zipper—14” in a color that matches yarn
- Fat quarter of fabric for bag lining (make sure it is washed and dried first to account for shrinkage), or repurpose old fabric.
Gauge: 1 granny square = 5 1/4” x 5 1/4 “—though gauge is not critical for this pattern.
Finished Size: Approximately 14.5” x 6” with a detachable adjustable strap extending from 19” to 36”.
