The Classic Turtleneck
A classic, top-down raglan with a soft, easy drape and clean lines. Knit at a relaxed-medium worsted gauge for that slouchy turtleneck feel—drapey without being floppy.
Design Features
- Top-down, seamless raglan construction
- Crew neckline shaped flat, then joined in the round (turtle neck knit later)
- Straight body; simple 1×1 rib hem and cuffs
Construction & Techniques
- Knit flat to shape the neckline, then in the round for yoke, body, and sleeves
- Raglan increases worked with M1R/M1L (and M1RP/M1LP on WS)
- Sleeves picked up from holders and knit in the round with paired decreases
- Underarm stitches cast on to bridge the divide (knitted or backloop CO)
- Stretchy bind-off in rib recommended (e.g., Ruke sewn bind-off or Jeny’s)
Materials & Specifications
- Yarn weight: Worsted (any worsted that meets gauge)
- Yardage: size-by-size yardage table included in pattern
- Suggested needles: 5.0 mm (US 8) for main fabric; 3.5–4.0 mm (US 4–6) for ribbing/neckband; circulars + DPNs or magic loop (or sizes to meet gauge)
- Notions: 8 stitch markers (incl. BOR + raglan lines), stitch holders/waste yarn, tapestry needle, scissors
Gauge
- 19 sts × 24 rnds = 10 cm (4”) in stockinette, knit in the round, after washing/blocking
- Relaxed-medium worsted gauge—nice drape for a slouchy turtleneck without being floppy. Adjust needle size to meet gauge and preferred fabric.
Finished Size
- Approximate finished bust at underarm (circumference):
XS 33.75”, S 38.75”, M 42”, L 44.75”, XL 49.75”, 2X 52.25”, 3X 56.5”, 4X 61.5”
- Intended ease: choose 4–8” (10–20 cm) positive ease or to taste. (Full schematic inside.)
Skill Level
- Confident Beginner (comfortable knitting in the round, increasing/decreasing, and picking up stitches). Pattern is test-knitter friendly and tech edited.
Usage
- Everyday, layer-able turtleneck. The relaxed fabric feels light but cozy; optional stripes add a timeless, sporty vibe.
Customization
- Neckband: pattern includes instructions for a turtleneck but you could easily do a crewneck if you wished.
- Body/sleeve length: knit more/less before rib
Care
- Follow the care instructions for your yarn. Block gently to measurements.
