Dun Rig is the name given to the highest summit in the Tweedsmuir Hills in the Scottish Borders region. Dun means ‘fort’ in Gaelic, and ‘Rig’ means ridge in Scots. This pattern was designed and made in autumn, my favourite season. The views from Dun Rig at this time of the year are of lush green fields and forests and autumnal golds and russets. With the sun now at a low golden setting, casting long desaturated shadows across the land, it really feels like the opulence of Christmas is just around the corner.

This is a fairly quick project to make (I can make one placemat in an evening). The finished placemat measures 35cm (13.7”) in diameter. It has a lovely textured border featuring just a hint of gold.

The placemat has been designed with two standard (in the UK) plate sizes in mind: these are 27cm (10.6”) and 30cm (11.8”) in diameter respectively. The smaller plate, when placed on the placemat, will be surrounded by a border of richly textured gold and green encircling the edge of the plate. The larger plate will have a border of textured bobbles all around its circumference. The effect is tasteful and elegant.

To incorporate the gold, two different yarns are held together for just one round.

This pattern has been rated as ‘Intermediate’, because it features more advanced stitches and increases. However, each stage of the pattern is described in detail, step by step, and there are four supporting video tutorials which help with the stitches. I believe a confident beginner could manage this, and it would certainly be achievable for a crocheter more familiar with patterns rated ‘Easy’.

The pattern uses Lily, Sugar ‘n Cream, with Lincatex, Gold Rush as an accent colour in just the border. One skein of Lincatex will be sufficient for between 6-8 placemats.

Amounts used of each yarn for making one placemat are detailed in the pattern and you can scale up as you require. The yardage estimated in this listing is for one placemat at the lowest estimate end, and four placemats at the upper estimate end.

You will receive 4 PDF files accessible via a download link when payment has been processed.

There are two versions: one version is designed with offline reading in mind, and features more images and a layout that is easy to scan with the eye (it is available in both UK and USA terms). The other version is more text based, and designed to be quickly incorporated into Knit Companion for those who like to follow their patterns digitally (this is also available in both UK and USA terms).

You will only need to print one pattern, if you print any at all, and you can choose which you prefer from the four clearly named files.
