The Fish Creek Hat utilizes a technique known as Shaped Colorwork. Unlike traditional stranded knitting, where motifs are created by changing colors across a static number of stitches, this pattern incorporates increases and decreases directly into the colorwork itself. This manipulation allows the fish motifs to take on a three-dimensional life, physically “popping” from the surface of the fabric.

Contrasting Color (CC): DK/Light Worsted Weight (Slightly thicker than MC), approximately 110 yds/ 100 m per 1.8 oz/ 50 g.
A Note on Yarn Weight: While this pattern was designed using a slightly thicker CC to make the fish motifs “pop,” you can absolutely use the same weight for both MC and CC.

Contrasting Color (CC)

Needles
Larger Needles: 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles (for Cast-on and Garter/I-cord sections).
Smaller Needles: 4 mm (US 6) circular needles (for the main colorwork body).
Double Pointed Needles for crown shaping if not using Magic Loop.
Always choose the needle size that helps you achieve the pattern gauge.
Gauge (Colorwork)
27 sts and 30 rnds = 4” (10 cm) in stranded colorwork after blocking, using the smaller needles.
