The original Garment pattern was knit in the round, from the bottom up, and designed for someone six feet in height. A simple adjustment of the number of stitches you cast on will allow you to customize the length. But there is now also a top-down version of the pattern, included with purchase. A version for Child-Sized Humans is also included, as is The Garment for Small Frogs.

Update, Sept 16, 2026: Two updates! First, the top-down version is now officially out of testing, as several people have completed it. Check the footnote for alternative ways of completing the increases. Second, the Garment for Child-Sized Humans is also now added to the PDF and included with the overall pattern!

Update, Aug 25, 2026: EXCITING NEWS! mehkekryn has written a version of her pattern for The Garment for Small Frogs, which is now included in this pattern! Look for The Garment for Child-Sized Humans to be available within the next few days. A crochet version is also in the works.

Update, Aug 9, 2026: Many thanks for all the Garment enthusiasm in recent days! In response to sensible feedback, I’m developing and testing two alternate versions of the pattern: one for children, and the other a top-down version. I’m not entirely sure why I chose to make the first The Garment bottom-up—it almost certainly makes more sense for sizing, etc., to make it top-down—although I will say that casting on 300 stitches for the bottom of a The Garment feels like quite a leap of faith into the great unknown. In any case, both new versions of the pattern will be included in the update and sent to everyone who’s already bought the original pattern.

Update, Aug 10, 2026: I have drafted a top-down version of The Garment. I’ve read through the draft several times and worked through the math, and everything seems to make sense, but I haven’t actually tested it yet. A huge shoutout to Ravelry knitter whoamo who’ll be testing the pattern out and letting us know how it goes! She also produced the TikTok video that went viral a few days ago and brought so much interest to The Garment.

Anyway, I’m posting this draft version, and you’re welcome to try it out! When it comes down to it, The Garment, for all its heft and splendor, is a fairly simple pattern, and I feel pretty confident that the top-down draft will work.
