Introduction to the Pattern…
The Outlander Series, by Diane Gabaldon, and its televised adaptation, has a rich and unique appeal to many an artist, especially the fiber artist. This shawl was inspired by the aesthetics of Outlander. It is intended to capture the wild, earthy, and rustic nature of the Highlands and is designed to be functional and delicate all at once. Its style was inspired by “The Gathering” featured in the first season of the series. The Gathering is an event focused on festivities, family, friends, feasting, and adorning one’s best attire.

This shawl is the perfect introduction to lace knitting for the newly intermediate knitter, as well as a fun and fulfilling project for the experienced knitter. Utilizing simple knits, purls, yarn overs and knit2togethers, this pattern creates a piece that will showcase that beautiful hand-dyed yarn in your stash, creating it into a lovely, cozy, and practical addition to anyone’s wardrobe.

Two Color Version
The two color Gathering Shawl adds a small twist to the original pattern, giving you instructions on how to make a larger shawl with two contrasting colors for a simple-to-knit statement piece. This idea is all credit to my mom, Carissa of Bumblebee Acres, who began playing with different yarns and colors in the original pattern, ending up with stunning results. All the stitches are the same as the original, easy, top-down pattern! Just pick two skeins that contrast and enjoy this meditative knit!
