The Herring Hat
The Herring Hat pattern now includes two distinct versions: the Original (2020) and the 2.0 (2026) update. While both feature the signature embossed “Fish” motif and tail-fin crown, they offer different construction methods and sizing options to suit your preferences.
- Sizing & Yarn VersatilityOriginal: Designed specifically for DK weight yarn. It offers two adult sizes achieved by switching needle sizes (3.75mm for Small, 4mm for Medium).
Version 2.0: Provides a much broader range with six sizes. It also includes dedicated instructions for two different gauges: Option A (DK) and Option B (Sport/Fingering), allowing you to use a wider variety of yarns from your stash.
- Construction & “Fish”
DesignOriginal:
The fish heads are shaped using 1/1 right and left crosses (cabling). The textured body is created by purling the Main Color and knitting the Contrast Color.
Version 2.0: The shaping is streamlined using Central Double Increases (CDI) and Bobbles (MB) for the “eyes,” eliminating the need for a cable needle. The texture is reversed to knitting the Main Color and purling the Contrast Color.
- New Features in 2.0 Earflaps: Version 2.0 includes instructions for optional garter stitch earflaps picked up from the brim.
Refined Crown: The crown decreases and transition to the tail fins have been updated for a smoother fit across all six sizes.
