The Mohair Sweater
A simple, oversized sweater that knits up quickly and seamlessly. Features drop shoulders, extra wide sleeves, generous cuffs and a loose fit.
Worked from the top down in 12-ply mohair with a few short rows at the shoulders to refine the fit. The back and front are knit flat, then joined at the underarms to continue the body in the round. Sleeves are picked up and knit in the round to the cuffs.
Fit & Yarn Details
Choose a 12 ply / aran weight mohair yarn or something with lots of fuzz. The sample was made using Mohair & Possum Store Kid Mohair Yarn in Sky. You could also try Touch Yarns 12ply Mohair or Rowan Tweed Haze.
Size C is worn in all the photos here with approx 40 cm / 16” ease. Designed to be worn with 15-40 cm / 6-16” of positive ease, depending on your fit preference. Sizes read as A (B, C) (D, E, F).
Finished bust measurements: cm = 116 (127, 138) (149, 160, 171) / inches = 45.75 (50, 54.5) (58.75, 63, 67.25)“
Yarn quantity: metres = 600 (650, 680) (740, 750, 800) / yards = 655 (700, 740) (800, 820, 870)
Needles: 9 mm (US 13) circular needle (or size to obtain gauge) with a suggested 80 cm (40”) long cord AND 6 mm (US 10) circular needle with a suggested 80 cm (40”) cord. NOTE: the sleeves and neckline are worked using the magic loop method, but you also opt for a shorter cord or DPNs.
Gauge: 11 sts x 13 rows = 10 cm x 10cm / 4”x4” square in stockinette stitch. If you have too many stitches across your 10 cm / 4” space, you need to go up one (or more) needle size. If you have less stitches than needed, you’ll have to go down a needle size.
