The Molly (Temperature) Square
For 2023, I wanted to finally make a temperature blanket, and I decided I wanted it to have the following features:
• A classic cool-to-warm color palette
• A blanket worked in squares, join-as-you-go style (JAYG)
• Two colors per square: both the daily high and daily low temperatures
I also wanted something a little more interesting than the traditional granny square or solid square, so I designed an intermediate-level square that could be worked in two color ways, presenting as two triangles, that could be also be worked in a smaller size or larger size.
Featuring crossed double crochet stitches and a cross flower motif, I named the square after my goddaughter Molly, who was one of the crossest, fussiest babies I’ve ever met (I say that lovingly!).
Pattern: written pattern in English, US terminology, for two square sizes and two color designs. Download includes a version with step-by-step photos as well as a print-friendly version.
Size: As written using the materials listed, the small square measures 3 5/8” (approximately 9.5 cm) and the large square measures 4 1/8” (approximately 10.5 cm).
I plan on making using the small square to make a completed blanket with border around 60” x 80”.
Also included: Suggestions for using this square to create a temperature blanket -- number of squares to make, layout, seaming, color chart, etc.
I hope you enjoy this pattern! Please feel free to comment or message me with any questions!
