the chance collection

chance (accident, random, haphazard: call it as you like) plays an important role in every life – at least in mine! - so here’s an attempt to translate this concept into knitting: a group of patterns that are dedicated to eagerly curious knitters who, like me, get bored easily and know that knitting is not just made of needles and yarn. therefore chance, in various ways, is used to relieve knitting from the contingency of the pattern’s detailed directions, transforming these pieces in random (and rather subversive) acts of knitting.

beyond basic instructions for fully customizable outcomes, each of these patterns is accompanied by some inspiration from movies, art, books and music to watch, read and listen to along the way - if you happen to knit one of them you’re invited to publish your project on Ravelry adding also your personal sources of inspiration!

note: the patterns of this collection are not based on conventional line-by-line instruction, thus for a satisfactory knitting experience it is essential to carefully read all the instructions in order to fully understand the whole process prior to start knitting.

the music of chance

a simple ring, made of strips of solid garter stitch broken by horizontal lines, where the height of the garter bands as well as the insertion of the lines and the possible placement of almost imperceptible musical notes may be guided by chance as random sound events or suggested by the knitter’s favorite music and personal knitting soundtrack.

it’s advisable to choose yarns that will give the piece a good drape and to define the dimensions that best suit each one’s preference when wearing a cowl – for all the rest the key is improvisation.

yarn:
from heavy lace to DK, single shade or multicolored yarns of about the same thickness, same or different composition.

used for the sample:
MC: Orange Flower BFL/Silk Fingering Weight - 55% Wool / 45% Silk - 100g = 398m/435yds in shade dark Chronos variation (80gr total)
CC: Wollmeise “Pure” 100% Merino Superwash - 100% Merino - 150g = 526m/574 in shade Maus Jung (15gr total)

needles:
according to the chosen yarn use needles that give a fabric with a good drape, one circular needle long enough to accomodate the number of the chosen sts (used here 4mm/US6 needle - 80 cm/32” long)

gauge:
not crucial but needs to be checked if you want to decide the final dimensions

size:
fully customizable - the sample measures 20cm/7.75” height and 156cm/61.5” circumference

skill level:
intermediate / patient
