From Stitch 'N Bitch Crochet:  The Happy Hooker:

This hat is worked in the back loop of each stitch, which gives it a cool stripy effect, while granny squares influence the pattern rows of clustered stitches.  Vintage buttons give it two looks, since the earflaps can be worn fastened up or left hanging down for cozy warmth.  This is a quick beginner’s pattern and can be easily made in one devoted evening, as the whole thing’s done with a combo of double crochet stitches.  Any worsted weight yarn will work, bu the low cost and color variety available in acrylic mean you can make a bright one for every outfit.
