These days craft is becoming an important medium for protest and solidarity around the globe. I recently purchased a “Melt the ICE” hat pattern on Ravelry that was shared as a fundraiser for charities that support immigrants in the Minneapolis area. The exercise prompted me to design my own version of the pointy red hat, shown here.

Why pointy and red? Well in WWII, in occupied Norway, the red pointy hat became a symbol of resistance and solidarity. The red pointy hat was adopted as it was the hat worn by Nisser or house spirits in Norwegian folklore, that could be courted to bring prosperity and luck or aggravated to bring misfortune.

This pattern is free - users are asked only to make a donation - of money, time or in kind - to the charity of their choice that serves vulnerable groups in their community.

You will need about 125 yards of worsted weight yarn to make this hat (more or less if you size up or down). To make a larger adult hat, I’d go up a needle size (5 mm) and to make a smaller adult hat, I’d go down (to 4 mm).
