The Salmon Lice (Lepeoptheirus salmonis) mittens are stranded colorwork mittens knitted bottom-up with a thumb gusset and shows three life stages of the salmon louse in the colorwork. This pattern comes in two sizes, a small and a large.

This pattern not only gives you the chance to learn about salmon lice, but also I will be donating 10 NOK (about $1 USD) to WWF, to help support the work they do in combating the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems.

I am a molecular biologist and geneticist who (at the time of publishing this pattern) is in the second year of my doctorate, which focuses on protein receptors in salmon lice. Niche huh? Well salmon lice are the biggest problem in the Norwegian salmon lice industry, causing both harm to wild fish stocks and farmed fish. The salmon louse has 8 life stages and this mitten depicts 3 of them.
