During ‘The Search’ in Outlander, Claire and Murtagh set out to find Jamie, first by tracking him and finding he escaped from the English. However, Jamie has gone into hiding and Claire and Murtagh need to let Jamie know to contact them, so Claire and Murtagh start a song and dance performance, hoping Jamie will hear about it and contact them. Unfortunately, the gypsies steal their act tricking Jamie into capture again. Claire and Murtagh share confidences on their search. Murtagh tells Claire about his unrequited love for Ellen, Jamie’s mother, and the boar tusk bracelets he made for her. Claire, now in possession of these bracelets, returns them to Murtagh and they carry on the search, only to be informed that Jamie is in Wentworth prison.
This Tunisian crochet shawl represents the story of The Search. Crocheted with two skeins of Honey Girl Farm Honey Sport Yarn (colors Murtagh and Sassenach), scratch stitch is used to represent tracking, lace forms notes on a scale for the song and dance routine, cross-stitch represents the gypsy double cross, and the boar tusk bracelets are created with reverse stitch relief. The final section of mesh illustrates the prison bars behind which they find Jamie.

Gauge: 18 stitches and 17 rows worked in Tunisian simple stitch creates a 4” x 4” square after wet blocking. Since this is a superwash yarn, the garment does grow after blocking. For reference, the shawl had a 23” spine and a 46” wingspan before blocking and a 25” spine and 53” wingspan after blocking.
