Note: This has not been tested by other knitters, and not all of the charts have been tested. If you see pics here, then they’ve been tested. If there is no pic, then I haven’t tested it. :-)

It is my hope that if you use the charts, that you will make a donation to charity (by the way, using Paypal system, 100% of your donation goes to the charity, and they give you a tax receipt). If you are looking for ideas, here are two charities that I think are in the spirit of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, and that I think are great:

The Innocence Project:

Doctors without Borders:

The pattern only provides rudimentary written instructions (like how many stitches to cast on, and how to adjust the length, and such). This pattern is almost solely charted. It also includes all images both right-side-up, and up-side-down so you can mix and match as you please. I’ve also included the alphabet (both directions) and blanks so you can design your own.

YARDAGE: As of now, I don’t have a yardage (thought you should have at least 4 skeins of the main color, and at least 2 of the contract color. Until I get the yardage figured out, I’d HIGHLY suggest only using yarns you can get more of.

YARN WEIGHT: Fingering, Sport, DK, Worsted, and Aran (my MC/wide panels were done in Aran) would all work just fine. I wouldn’t use bulky, super-bulky or lace.

Most of the designs and charts in this pattern are mine. However, three came from other sources:

  • The “wallpaper” background for the panels came from Melissa Leapman’s The Knit Stitch Pattern Handbook. It’s called “Framed Ovals.”
  • The honeycomb stripe and also comes from Leapman’s book.
  • The Black Lotus design adapted with permission from Heather Desserud/Heddaknits. It came from her lovely Lotus Mittens pattern.

The pattern includes the following panels (wide stripes):

  • 221B door
  • Baskerville pawprint with claw holes
  • Bee
  • Black Lotus
  • Calabash/Meerschaum pipe
  • Bored! text bubble
  • Deerstalker hat

  • Magnifying glass (with optional bullet hole)
  • Plain wallpaper (ends)

Feel free to incorporate any of my designs/charts from this pattern in your own designs. I ask that you do the following:

  1. Please credit me.
  2. Please use my designs in non-commercial patterns. In other words, don’t sell any patterns you develop from my designs (you may give away such patterns for free though - just remember to list me as the original source in your pattern (see #1 above).
  3. For specifics, see CC BY-NC-SA 4.0

These charts are meant as a gift to the Sherlock fan community and hopefully inspire more designs by others, and also to raise money for charity. Please don’t use them to sell patterns for personal gain.

Oh, and I don’t mind at all if you sell knitted items made from my charts.
