The Sweater Vest of Socks were designed for you to have fun with mini-skeins or stash bust those leftover balls of fingering weight yarn while maintaining the stuffy dignity of academia. While these socks don’t have elbows to put patches on or pockets to protect, they still convey the air of wandering through halls of knowledge in search for the “good” coffee machine.

The Sweater Vest of Socks are worked in the round from the cuff down using either long circular needles to work in Magic Loop or DPNs. This pattern is recommended for knitters with experience working in the round, striping, and turning a heal.

Yarn
1(1, 2, 2) Lattes & Llamas Mini-Vacation Yarn Set (100 grams/ 463 yards total; 20 grams/ 92 yards each) or a comparable fingering weight yarn in five colorways. Sample is shown in ‘Crowned Prince of Faerie’.

Note that yardage is estimated and may vary depending on yarn used, gauge variations, or modifications.

Color A: 14(16, 18, 20) grams/ 65(74, 83, 92) yards
Color B: 12(14, 16, 18) grams/ 56(65, 74, 83) yards
Color C: 18(20, 26, 28) grams/ 83(92, 120, 129) yards
Color D: 9(10, 16, 18) grams/ 42(46, 74, 83) yards
Color E: 9(10, 18, 20) grams/ 42(46, 83, 92) yards

The instructions are written for five colorways, but the pattern is easily adapted to use two or more colors, making it a great scrappy project.

Needles
US1 / 2.25 mm to work in Magic Loop or size needed to obtain gauge.

I prefer the Magic Loop method when knitting socks. If you are more comfortable using DPNs or two circulars, this pattern is easily converted.

Gauge
32 sts = 4” in stockinette stitch, knit in the round and blocked

Sizing
7(8, 9, 10) inch foot circumference.

Stitch counts are written for size 7 with (8, 9, 10) size stitch counts in brackets. Sample is shown in size 8.
